The true cost of a cheap coat
A coat bought for one winter and replaced the next costs more than it appears to. Not in a single receipt, but across the seasons it fails to survive. Thin wool pills within a year. A loose weave loses its shape by the second wash. What looked affordable in the shop becomes, over a decade, several coats bought and discarded rather than one bought and kept.
A well made coat reverses that arithmetic. The higher price is paid once. The years that follow cost nothing further, beyond the care the fabric already asks for.
What makes a coat worth keeping
Three things separate a coat built to last from one built to sell. The fibre itself, long staple cashmere and wool rather than short, brittle fibre that pills within months. The weight and weave of the fabric, dense enough to hold its shape through years of wear. And the construction, seams finished with care rather than simply closed.
None of this is visible in a product photograph. It is felt in the hand, and proven over years, which is exactly why so few brands choose to build this way when a lighter, cheaper alternative sells just as easily today.
Made to order, not made to sell
Atelier MAUDÉ was built around a different premise: a coat should exist because someone chose it, not because a warehouse needed to move stock. Each piece is made after the order is placed, in Suzhou, from wool and cashmere sourced in Inner Mongolia. Nothing is produced in anticipation of a sale that may never come.
This is slower, and it means waiting a little longer to receive what has been ordered. It also means nothing is manufactured only to be discounted and discarded a season later.
An investment, read plainly
Buying fewer, better coats is not an argument against spending. It is an argument for spending once, on something built to answer the question a cheap coat never can: will you still be wearing this next winter, and the one after that.
